“Beared Gunner” aboard HMS Repulse

Whilst at Plymouth for a refit in Feb 1940, a sailor aboard HMS Repulse known as the “Beared Gunner” shoulders a 4-inch shell.

Nearly two years later, on the 10th December 1941, whilst trying to protect Singapore, Repulse was sunk by Japanese aircraft with the loss of 508 crew.

This Seaman, who has grown a beard since joining the Navy, is known on board as the “Bearded Gunner”. Here he is shouldering a 4 inch shell. © IWM A 1339
