Pilot Officer Arthur Victor “Taffy” Clowes

P/O Arthur Victor “Taffy” Clowes of No. 1 sqn, standing by the nose of his Hurricane Mark I, P3395, at RAF Wittering.

The wasp emblem was painted on the nose of his aircraft during the Battle of Britain, Clowes adding a new stripe to the body for each enemy aircraft that he shot down.

“Pilot Officer A V “Taffy” Clowes of No. 1 Squadron RAF, standing by the nose of his Hawker Hurricane Mark I, P3395 ‘JX-B’, at Wittering, Huntingdonshire. The wasp emblem was painted on the nose of his aircraft during the Battle of Britain, Clowes adding a new stripe to the body for each enemy aircraft which he shot down.     He was never known as Taffy, he was known as “Darky”.He was my cousin and at one point we were both using our grandads as home . Me , about 1935 – about 1939. I was 8 when the war started, now 94, living in OZ.
