Flt Lt Mark “Hilly” Brown and P/O Charles Chetham, RAF Wittering, late 1940

Canadian Flt Lt (later Wg Cdr) Mark Henry “Hilly” Brown, DFC & Bar and Devon born P/O Charles Arthur Copeland Chetham of No. 1 Sqn, standing by the nose of a Hurricane Mk I, RAF Wittering, late 1940.

Sadly neither man survived the war. Brown was killed in a “fighter sweep” over Sicily Nov 1941, and Chetham died in Greece Apr 1941 aged just 21.

“Flight-Lieutenant M H Brown and Pilot Officer Chatham of No. 1 Squadron RAF standing by the nose of a Hawker Hurricane Mark I at Wittering, Huntingdonshire. Mark Henry Brown was the first Canadian fighter pilot of the war to become an ‘ace’. He had, by the time this photograph was taken, shot down at least 18 enemy aircraft over France and Great Britain, and in the following month, was appointed Commanding Officer of No. 1 Squadron. One year later, flying from Malta, he was killed in a fighter sweep over Sicily.” © IWM CH 1566
