Mrs Redmond, a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service, Orford, Suffolk, 1941

“A Mrs Redmond, a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service, and wearing both an Air Raid Precautions lapel badge and the medals of her late husband, stands at her front door (crisscrossed with blast tape) at home in Orford, Suffolk, 1941.”

A striking portrait of villager Mrs Redmond, now a widow, who wears the medals that her late husband won during his service with the navy during the First World War. Four of her sons are serving in the navy, whilst a fifth is in the army. She ‘fights’ in various Civil Defence organisations, as can be seen by the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) overall and badge and the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) badge that she wears along with the medals. Note the criss-cross of tape on the glass panes in her front door.© IWM D 4862
