This is an early attempt at image colourisation. The original is of an aircraft belonging to 365th Fighter Group, 388th Fighter Squadron USAAF during the Second World War.
The fighter group were known as the “Hell Hawks”, and they flew from their base at RAF Beaulieu in the New Forest during the Normandy invasion of 1944.
The Aircraft and Pilot, 2nd Lieutenant Morris Weiner, were sadly lost on the 23rd of July 1944, after a mid-air collision over Omaha beach1.
